This Torah scroll was rescued by Josef Schuber, a resident of Dessau, Germany, from a burning synagogue during the “Kristallnacht” pogrom, and was brought by him to Israel in July 1939 via Italy.
The German newspaper “Dessauer Stadtnachrichten” on November 9, 1938 published an article titled “Now It’s Enough”. The text of the article states: “There are still 204 Jews living in Dessau. Here are their names; keep your eyes open." The published list of names includes those of Josef Schuber, his wife Sophia, nee Wagenberg, and their daughter Dora.
